Programme Overview

The Applied Sports Medicine and Performance Nutrition course is designed to equip future practitioners, coaches, and athletes with a robust understanding of sports medicine and physical fitness. The curriculum explores the critical roles of the sports medicine team, evaluating how exercise affects the human body while balancing physical and mental health benefits against the risks of injuries and overtraining.

Throughout this programme, students will learn to classify and manage common acute and chronic injuries, utilizing immediate management strategies such as the PRICE principle. By combining injury prevention techniques with basic sports first aid and nutritional fundamentals, students will be prepared to maintain athlete safety and guide progressive return-to-play protocols.

What You Will Learn

Define the scope of sports medicine and identify the roles of the sports medicine team.
Evaluate the components of physical fitness and the physiological benefits and risks of exercise.
Classify soft tissue and bone injuries and apply the PRICE principle for immediate management.
Implement injury prevention strategies, including proper warm-up, mobility, and cool-down exercises.
Administer basic sports first aid, primary surveys, and essential hydration and nutrition protocols.

Module Overview

The course is delivered across three focused lectures, blending theoretical sports medicine with practical first aid and injury management protocols.

Core Modules

Explores the definition, history, and scope of sports medicine while identifying the key members of the sports medicine team (physicians, physiotherapists, nutritionists, etc.). Covers the core components of physical fitness, how exercise affects the body, and the balance between the benefits of exercise and the risks of injuries, dehydration, and overtraining.

Classifies acute and chronic (overuse) injuries, detailing soft tissue issues like sprains and strains, as well as bone/joint injuries such as fractures and dislocations. Teaches immediate injury management using the PRICE principle (Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and identifies "red flag" injuries requiring immediate medical referral.

Focuses on prevention strategies including safe environments, dynamic warm-ups, and static cool-downs. Reviews nutrition and hydration basics alongside basic sports first aid (primary/secondary surveys, bleeding control, and CPR awareness), culminating in safe return-to-play principles.
