Programme Overview

The Diploma in Cancer Biology provides an accessible introduction to cancer and the biological processes involved in cancer development. The programme follows the progression from normal cells to abnormal growth, cancer development, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Students will explore common cancers, cancer risk factors, signs and symptoms, diagnostic approaches, biomarkers and laboratory investigations. The programme also introduces major cancer treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, together with cancer prevention and screening.

The programme is designed to provide an introductory understanding of cancer biology without requiring advanced molecular oncology knowledge.

Programme Aim

Introduce students to cancer as a major human disease.
Explain normal cell growth and how abnormal growth can occur.
Introduce the development and progression of cancer.
Explore common cancer types and their risk factors.
Introduce cancer diagnosis and laboratory investigations.
Explain the basic role of cancer biomarkers.
Introduce major cancer treatment approaches.
Develop awareness of cancer prevention and screening.
Introduce students to basic cancer research through case studies or a project.

Learning Outcomes

Describe the basic characteristics of cancer.
Explain normal cell growth and division.
Describe how abnormal cell growth can contribute to cancer.
Identify major cancer risk factors.
Describe common types of cancer.
Recognise common signs and symptoms associated with cancer.
Explain basic approaches used in cancer diagnosis.
Describe the role of selected cancer biomarkers and laboratory tests.
Explain the basic principles of major cancer treatments.
Discuss approaches to cancer prevention and screening.
