Develop advanced knowledge of how nutrition supports athletic performance, recovery and health through scientific study, practical planning, and applied research.

Duration 1 Year (2 Semesters)
Level SLQF 08
Credits 30 Credits
Delivery ODL / Blended

Programme Overview

The PGD in Sports Nutrition (SLQF Level 08) develops advanced knowledge of how nutrition supports athletic performance, recovery and health. Through scientific study, practical nutrition planning and applied research, students learn to assess athletes’ needs and develop evidence-based strategies for different sports and training demands.

What You Will Learn

Explain how exercise and nutrition influence metabolism and performance.
Match fuelling strategies to different sports and energy demands.
Assess athletes’ dietary habits and individual nutritional needs.
Calculate energy, macronutrient and fluid requirements.
Create personalised meal plans for athletes.
Adapt nutrition across training, competition and recovery.
Evaluate strategies for body composition and weight management.
Critically assess supplements, ergogenic aids and anti-doping risks.
Plan hydration and nutritional support for recovery and health.
Apply research evidence to practical sports nutrition challenges.

Module Overview

The diploma is delivered across 13 comprehensive modules, structured into foundational nutritional biochemistry and advanced applied practice.

Semester 1: Foundations & Physiology

Explore how exercise affects body systems and how nutrients are metabolised to support energy production, training adaptations and recovery.

Examine the nutritional demands of different energy systems and develop fuelling strategies for strength, power and endurance activities.

Learn to assess dietary intake, training demands and individual goals, using these findings to develop and review personalised nutrition plans.

Adapt food intake, nutrient timing and recovery strategies to changing training loads, competition schedules and rest periods.

Explore body composition assessment and sustainable nutrition strategies for managing body mass while supporting performance and athlete wellbeing.

Critically evaluate supplement evidence, safety, product quality and contamination risks, with attention to anti-doping responsibilities and ethical practice.

Semester 2: Applied Practice & Research

Examine how nutrition and hydration support athlete wellbeing and recovery, including nutritional considerations during injury and reduced training.

Integrate assessment, planning and evaluation skills in an athlete-focused case study, presenting practical recommendations supported by scientific evidence.

Explore nutritional and non-nutritional performance aids, comparing their proposed mechanisms, effectiveness, limitations and suitability for different sporting contexts.

Practise calculations for energy needs, macronutrient targets, nutrient timing and fluid replacement, translating results into practical dietary recommendations.

Study fluid balance, sweat losses and electrolyte replacement, and develop hydration plans suited to exercise duration, intensity and environmental conditions.

Build balanced, sport-specific meal plans that account for training schedules, food preferences, cultural practices, dietary restrictions and budget.

Investigate a sports nutrition topic through a structured research project, critically evaluating evidence and presenting findings with appropriate ethical awareness.
